Liam Sharp, fresh off his critically acclaimed runs on both Wonder Woman alongside Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott and his dual writer/artist gig on The Brave and The Bold, is turning his artist pen skyward. He’s joining forces with comics maestro Grant Morrison to tell new stories about Space Sector 2814’s first Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. As part of the kick-off for the new title, Sharp will be visiting Berkeley’s Escapist Comics on November 10.

Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp on The Green Lantern

What’s different about the Morrison/Sharp take on Green Lantern? Morrison explained in an interview with IGN:

“Instead of the big, epic, 12-part stories, we’re focusing down on the everyday life of a space cop. Basically, it’s no more apocalypse-ending storylines,” Morrison told IGN over a phone interview along with Sharp. “The basic concept is that [Hal Jordan] is like a space cop that patrols a sector of the universe where anything can happen. We’ve made it more like a police procedural.”

Let me be the first to say (or perhaps the 100th) that’s a relief. As much as I’ve enjoyed Robert Venditti’s run on Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps it’ll be nice to get back to the original mission of the Corps: Space Cops. For the last several years, if Jordan hasn’t been fighting a threat to the Corps itself he’s been fighting some sort of Universe ending baddie or baddies. It’s starting to feel like the only reason the Green Lantern Corps exist is to make sure the Corps exists.

Of course, with Morrison writing this book we know we’ll get a story that goes deep into Green Lantern lore. Sharp confirmed this in an interview with DC and said it was one of the selling points when he was making the decision of what would come after Wonder Woman.

There are also very specific references to characters from years and years ago. When I was initially reading the script, I was just constantly on the internet. Some of these are so obscure that the referencing goes really deep. You have to really look to find it. He knows his stuff.

The artist will be signing on November 10 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Facebook event is here.
